Protecting the House

I have to say, that Mabel is definitely protective of her territory.  Unless of course it's my brother in law coming over to visit! :)  Mabel seems to love him to no end, and just sits wagging and waiting for him to walk up the yard to kiss her!

Seriously though, Mabel is quite vocal about not wanting people near her yard.  Usually a simple "Mabel No, Sit" will work, and then she sits and watches.  But occasionally, as in the case of skateboarding teenagers, nothing can calm her nerves so she has to be brought inside.  I want to stress that this is not aggression, just a dog's natural instinct to warn off strangers.  Mabel has not once tried to charge the fence, pull her tie out, or even run after the "offenders".  She stands her ground, generally in the center of the yard or whichever spot puts her between the person and the front door, and barks.  Only two instances have made her hackles rise.

The first was my neighbor.  For some reason Mabel just does not like him, however she tolerates his wife pretty well.  And the second was the skateboarders.  I can't help but wonder if she's releasing repressed anger towards someone or something in these instances?

Our quiet little Mabel is no longer the Silent Partner to Twister!  :)
